The Whitby Ontario County Gaol would have received its prisoners from Oshawa in the east, through Pickering, and the northern townships of Old Ontario county. The Oxford County Jail was located at Woodstock. The Hastings County Gaol was located at Belleville.

The Welland County Jail was situated in the town of Welland. There is an excellent first person account by Silvester Brown, as noted above, of conditions inside the Chatham Jail.

Catharines Jail housed Lincoln County prisoners. The Kitchener Gaol served Waterloo County and surrounding areas. The Windsor Gaol was located in Essex County. The Cayuga Jail was located in Haldimand County.

Those who wish to use these databases as guides in their own searches, are welcome to do so. The Milton Jail housed Halton County prisoners.

Unfortunately the ages of prisoners are not recorded until for the Home District gaol. Twelve inch long rats, and rank odours from sewers beneath the jail are described in detail. The following database has been constructed from records of various Upper Canada Ontario Gaols.

The Lindsay Jail housed Victoria County prisoners. The specific crime of an individual was not recorded in early Chatham records, charges were noted simply as a felony or a misdemenor. The Prince Edward County jail was situated at Picton. Larceny theft was a major problem, as it is in many neighborhoods today.

These District or County Jails received their inmates from fairly large geographical regions. The Wellington County Gaol was located at Guelph. Waterloo was known as Berlin at this time.
